Top 10 beaches in America for 2016, ranked by "Dr. Beach" (Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman), and the "2nd Place winner" is ... Siesta Key Beach!
For the first time in 25 years, Dr. Leatherman has reset the clock, allowing beaches that have previously been named No. 1 to receive recognition again.
Also, in 1987, Siesta Key Beach was judged "the World's Finest and Whitest beach". Made from 99% pure quartz, the sand is soft, floury white and cool to the touch.
"Caribbean - Similar Appeal"
Siesta Key separates itself from mainland Sarasota by two bridges; on the north spanning a portion of Greater Sarasota Bay, and midway, the Intercostal Waterway. Folks living on the Key often claim to have found paradise; whether on the Gulf side, on or near the beaches; or on the Bay side with its canals and waterways. Many are artisans whose works are found in numerous shops in the Village (its busy hub). The Key's uniqueness stems from it extending into the warm waters of the Gulf whose temperature moderates the daily climate.
"Allure of Siesta Key"
Relaxing is easy on Siesta Key: sand soft and white as sugar, brilliant sunshine and azure waters abound. But be prepared, with so much to see and do, it's almost impossible to lie idle on this island!
First ... the beach, as perfect as a stretch of sand could be. Whether you curl your toes in it, run your fingers through it or bask on it, the allure of Siesta Key sand is contagious. Beach lovers flock to these silky shores to take advantage of the wide expanse of sand and the clear, warm and tranquil Gulf waters. The beach is perfect for swimming, strolling, shell collecting, sand dollar searching in the surf (typically calm with a gradual drop-off which is great for small kids, as well as skim boarders) Or, choosing the more active beach pursuits which are plentiful for the more adventurous. A terrific family vacation venue, or ideal for a romantic getaway.
